My work explores the emotional and symbolic connection we hold with childhood objects and family heirlooms. Using a baby doll’s pram and a baby’s dress that have been passed down within my family, I investigate how these seemingly simple objects embody nostalgia, protection, and the passage of time.
Through photography, I document these objects not just as material possessions but as vessels of memory. The process of creating artefacts through toning and cyanotypes became a way of reinterpreting and preserving these memories, transforming them into something fragile. The cyanotype process, with its deep blues and unpredictable textures, evokes a dreamlike quality, like a faded memory becomes blurred over time. While the use of toning allowed be to add warmth and age, echoing the idea of objects that have be stored away and unused, like a relic / artefact.
The concept behind my work is rooted in the idea of holding on, our reluctance to let go of things that connect us to the past. These heirlooms become symbols of continuity, comfort, and sometimes fear. A fear of forgetting, loss, or breaking the thread that ties us to our personal histories.
By exploring these objects to create my work, it allowed me to explore how memory and emotion are preserved not only in the physical form but in the act of remembrance itself.
